Caribbean Workout Night

By Sean Lanigan

When you think of the Caribbean, what are some images that pop into your mind? How about pictures of a tropical paradise or all of the tourism the region promotes so well? On Tuesday, October 20th, The Downbeat Café at Five Towns College was the place to be for the first-ever Caribbean Workout Night, an event where you could represent your Caribbean flag, have fun and dream of vacation.

The event was the creation of Five Towns College RA Tiera Summers, who wanted to produce an event with different qualities that no one had ever seen before and also involving her passion for Caribbean music.

“I wanted to think of an event that would be fun that had to do with dancing and working out. Let’s work out to Caribbean music, which keeps you very upbeat and keeps you going,” said Summers.

Participants danced and exercised to Caribbean music that was played from YouTube, and the songs were catchy with an amazing beat. If anybody got thirsty, plenty of refreshments were available, ranging from Gatorade to Vitamin Water.

Halfway through the event, students were able to pick a Caribbean Flag that they wanted to hold with pride while they continued to dance and exercise the night away. Destini Fell, a Theatre major at Five Towns College, loves events that combine a lively feeling plus include exercising to rhythmic music. Fell said in between dance moves, “I am always looking for events where you get to work out and have fun.”

Students hope that there will be future Caribbean Workout Nights to get down to the beat in The Downbeat.
