Apple’s Keynote took place on Tuesday, September 14th. The Keynote is always mind blowing, with crazy CGI and superb overall production quality. This year’s presentation started with a revision of Apple Fitness, the Apple Watch, and the entry level iPad, as well as a complete redesign to the iPad Mini.

As always, they saved the best for last – the iPhone. Starting with the entry-level iPhone – the 13 and 13 Mini. Most users may not notice too many changes from the 12 to the 13. However, there are some minor updates with the cameras and the display, something users have come to expect when new models launch. The cameras are placed differently than in the past – now arranged diagonally as opposed to directly on top of each other. The 13 and 13 Mini still feature the same camera styles as before, with one being a traditional lens and one being an ultra-wide lens. The ultra-wide lens now features a macro mode, most often seen on high-end cameras with lenses dedicated to that job. The display is also now significantly brighter – with a peak brightness of 1000 nits. (1 nit is equal to the brightness of one candle)
The 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max are where the biggest changes are seen this year. The most notable upgrade for pro users – and what I’m most excited for; the new Pro Motion display, which provides a more accurate, smooth, and fluid experience for users who will put the pro models through their paces. However, don’t be fooled. To conserve battery life, Apple has gone for a non-traditional design, where the display will actually adjust itself from 120hz all the way down to 10hz, depending on the user’s needs. The peak brightness has also been upgraded to 1200 nits. That being said, the battery is larger than the previous model, with up to two additional hours of battery life on the iPhone 13 Pro Max. The cameras are also slightly different, with the telephoto lens now 3x zoom as opposed to the 2.5x zoom on the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max. Dolby Vision is now standard across the board with the pro models, whereas last year it was capped to the 12 Pro Max. And for the first time on an iPhone – Cinematic mode. Cinematic mode can adjust the zoom and focus based on AI subject tracking automatically. The iPhone can adjust between 2 focal points without any user interaction, besides the user setting the initial individual focal points.
The iPhones are available for pre-order today – Friday, September 17th, with the earliest expected delivery of October 6th.
The iPhone 13 Mini will start at $699, the 13 at $799, the 13 Pro at $999 and the 13 Pro Max at $1099. Apple designed accessories are all available right now as well with cases for the new iPhone starting at just $49.
